REDUCE POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARDS

Here's some helpful Information from South Carolina Fire Wise Communities:

Fire Fighting Access:

  • Ensure streets are wide enough for emergency vehicles to pass
  • Enlarge cul-de-sacs so fire engines can turn around
  • Clearly mark your driveway with address
  • Trim driveway trees and shrubs

Landscaping:

  • Plant fire resistant shrubs: non-resinous, high moisture content
  • Remove combustible mulch from around your house
  • Mow and water grass and shrubs
  • Remove dense vegetation within 100 feet of your house
  • Remove vines, prone low-hanging branches
  • Remove and recycle yard debris
  • Keep your roof and gutters free of dead leaves, pine straw, and overhanging limbs (an ember could land on the dead leaves and set your house on fire.)

Home Construction:

  • Use nonflammable roofing material; avoid wood shake shingles
  • Enclose boxing around roof and use nonflammable, non-melting soffit and attic vents
  • Install spark arrester on your chimney
  • Keep propane tanks and firewood away from structures
  • Attach hoses to outside faucets

You may contact our local Protect the Mountain Association (PTMA) who is leading the effort on fire safety.

If you would like any other information contact your local Forestry Commission, fire department office or visit www.firewise.org.
