Welcome to all residents of Paris Mountain
Updated: January, 2010

The purpose of the Altamont Club is to maintain and foster social relationships, environmental beauty and neighborhood security for the benefit of the residents of the area; and to provide a forum for exploration of issues affecting the Paris Mountain area.

We have three socials each year, an "Adopt-A-Highway" program, and we retain an off-duty sheriff's deputy to patrol several nights each month. Dues are $40.00 per year per family. Please join your neighbors and become a member of the Altamont Club!

Patrol Report

While the Altamont Club is a "social" organization, many residents are not aware that 50% of the Altamont Club budget is spent on added mountain security. which benefits all residents of Paris Mountain - not just our members. So please encourage your neighbors to join the Club to help psubsidize these costs, and if you are not already a member of the Altamont Club, please consider joining.

Our security officer administered 63 tickets for the period July through October of 2009 including seatbelt violations, speeding, motorcycle racing and possession of drugs and/or alcohol. In addition to writing tickets to keep our roads safer, our officer provides a much needed security presence to protect our homes and property. The Greenville County Sherriff’s office allows our officer to patrol the Mountain during his off duty hours. In addition to using his county patrol car, he also has full support of the Sherriff’s office.

Again, if you have not paid your dues, please do so. It is important that we continue to provide this service on the mountain.

As always, it's a good idea to take the following precautions:

- Shut garage doors at night and when away.
- Move valuables left in vehicles to the trunk or out of sight.
- Leave your outside lighting on at night. Motion activated lights are also an excellent deterrent.

Membership

If you are a new resident or know of a new resident that would like to be a member of the Altamont Club, please contact Bill Renninger at 232-4887 or by email. Even better, come and meet your neighbors at the next social event!

Cyclist/motorist Task Force – by Fraser League

The Cyclist/Motorist Task Force has been meeting on a monthly basis and has developed a “code of conduct” for cyclists and motorists alike. This “Code of Conduct” addresses most of the scenarios that motorists and cyclist encounter in a typical commute. The purpose of the organization is to improve cyclist/motorist relations on the road. Since it would be nearly impossible to assess the impact of these codes on our entire community, the coalition has requested that the Altamont Club (representing the motorists) and the Greenville Spinners (representing the cyclists) become familiar with the respective codes of conduct.

There’s no “hotter” cycling destination in our community than Paris Mountain and we’re more likely to encounter cyclists on our commute home than most other residents in the county. The Cyclist/Motorist Task Force has asked that we become familiar with the “Motorist” codes and put them into practice. I will distribute a copy of the “Motorists” and “Cyclists” codes at the Christmas party so that each of us will better understand what to do when we encounter a cyclist. Since I serve on the task force, I will be the contact person for our residents.

Any and all feedback from you will be helpful in assessing the effectiveness of the codes so please contact me by e-mail or call me at 233-3724. Please keep in mind that not all cyclists are members of the Spinners just as all motorists on Altamont are not residents of Paris Mountain. There will continue to be unpleasant experience but we hope that the efforts of the coalition can greatly improve the relationship that we have with cyclists. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. (You can see a similar code @ www.yieldtolife.org under “tips for cyclists and motorists”).

Vistas

Altamont Club members often ask about issues that our by-laws do not allow us to address as a club. These may involve political or legal action on behalf of mountain residents. The stated purpose of the Altamont Club is to foster social relationships, environmental beauty and neighborhood security for the benefit of the residents of the area, and to provide a forum for exploration of issues affecting the Paris Mountain area. In other words, we can provide a forum, but we cannot provide the action. Greenville Vistas Association is a neighborhood organization that does address these issues, and is prepared to take legal or political action. For details, visit their web page at vistas.parismountain.net.

Paris Mountain State Park

We are so fortunate to have Paris Mountain state park as our neighbor.  The park land and the residential part of the mountain are an integral part of Greenville’s history.  In times past, the Cherokee Indians made this area their home.  Paris Mountain is named after Richard Pearis, who started a gristmill on the Reedy River, which was the beginning of Greenville, as we know it.  Many of the buildings in the park were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s.

If you have not taken advantage of the park, you have missed a treat.  There are three lakes in the park, two beautiful trails, and a path around Lake Placid that is perfect for a fall day, even if you have small children.  If you’re lucky, you may see a blue heron, Peregin falcon, or other unusual wildlife.  Camp Buckhorn is available with cabins that many people use for family reunions and other gatherings, and there are also numerous picnic shelters.

Tax Refund

Residents of Paris Mountain are eligible to receive a tax refund from Greenville County when septic tanks are pumped. To qualify, it will be necessary to call Robert Arms at Metropolitan Sewer, 277-4442 and get a refund authorization.  After having a firm of your choice perform the pumping, send the paid receipt and signed authorization form to the address on the form, for a refund of $125.00 of the cost.
